The two specifications that decide it
Published comb lengths. Body skin is mobile and loose in a way facial skin held taut over a jaw is not, which means the guard - not the blade - is what keeps the cutting edge off you. A tool that publishes its comb lengths lets you pick a length and return to it. A tool that does not is asking you to find out by trial.
A real waterproof rating. IPX7 is a defined, tested standard: immersion in one meter of fresh water for thirty minutes. “Showerproof” is a marketing word with no test behind it. Both tools here can get wet; only one tells you how wet.
Why the Manscaped is the pick
Because it publishes the numbers this job needs. A fixed comb at 1.4 mm plus two adjustable combs covering 2 to 12 mm is a genuine published range, and almost nothing else in the category discloses one at all.
The two interchangeable heads are the second argument. A trimmer blade for reducing length and a foil blade for going close are different tools doing different jobs, and having both in one body means the sequence - reduce first, finish second - is possible without buying twice. Two things worth knowing before you buy either
- Rounded blade tips are the safety feature that matters. Both tools have them and both makers mention them, because a squared blade tip on mobile skin is how nicks happen in this area specifically.
- Neither replaces a razor and neither should. Going properly bare on body skin with a blade is a different decision with a different set of consequences - principally ingrown hairs, which that guide explains are caused by cutting hair below the skin surface. A guarded trim cannot do that, which is most of the argument for using one.

Philips Norelco Bodygroom 7000
Skip this one. Not a bad tool - the 80-minute runtime is the longest here and the dual-sided design is genuinely convenient. But it publishes no comb lengths at all, and on this part of the body the guard length is the specification that decides whether the result is comfortable. Showerproof is also not the same claim as an immersion rating, and Philips is explicit about that.
Dual-sided: a four-directional shaver on one end and an adjustable-length trimmer on the other, so you trim the length down and then take it bare without swapping heads. Questions people actually ask
What length should I trim body hair to?
Longer than you think, and never bare on a first attempt. A guard holds the hair off skin that is far more mobile than a face, and going straight to a bare blade is how people end up with ingrown hairs in places considerably less forgiving than a jaw.
What does IPX7 actually mean?
A tested standard: protection against immersion in up to one meter of fresh water for up to thirty minutes. “Showerproof” is not a standard and does not mean submersible - Philips says so explicitly about the Bodygroom, which is creditable and also a real limitation.
Can I use a beard trimmer as a body groomer?
Mechanically yes, and it is worth knowing why the dedicated tools exist: rounded blade tips and guards designed for mobile skin. A beard trimmer blade is designed to work against a jaw held taut, which is not the situation.
Trim wet or dry?
Dry for length reduction - wet hair clumps and clogs a blade, and it sits shorter than dry hair so you take off more than you meant. Wet with a gel for a bare finish, if you are going that far and the tool is rated for it.
