How to clean an electric shaver

Five steps, most of them twenty seconds. The one that matters most is the one people do wrong: never put a brush on the foil.

The five steps

  1. Rinse the head under a warm tap after every shave. Head off if it detaches, water through it for twenty seconds. Every premium shaver we rank publishes full waterproofing, so this is not a risk on those. Stubble left in the head is what turns a good shaver into one that pulls.
  2. Tap it out and let it air dry, head off. Shake the water out, tap the head against a palm, and leave it open on a shelf rather than closing it into a travel case wet. Trapped moisture is what corrodes the cutter block from behind.
  3. Once a week, take the foil off and brush the cutters. The brush in the box, on the cutters and the inside of the head. Never brush the foil itself - it is a few hundredths of a millimeter thick and a brush will deform it.
  4. Oil the cutters if the maker says to. A drop on the foil with the shaver running, if your manual calls for it. Some sealed cassette designs do not. Check the manual rather than guessing - this is one place where the instruction genuinely differs by model.
  5. Replace the head on the published schedule, not when it feels bad. Braun publishes about 18 months for its foil and cutter block; Philips publishes four months for the OneBlade blade. Write the date on the box when you fit one, because you will not remember.

Why this is worth five minutes a week

Because replacement heads are proprietary and expensive. There is no commodity standard for shaver foils the way there is for double-edge razor blades, so the maker sets the price of keeping your shaver running - and cleaning is the only lever you control that makes a head last its full published interval instead of half of it.

It also fixes the most common complaint about electric shavers, which is that they “stopped cutting properly”. Nine times in ten that is a head packed with stubble and skin oil rather than a worn cutter.

Daily: twenty seconds under a tap

Every shaver we rank except the Remington publishes full waterproofing, which makes this trivial: pop the head, run warm water through it for twenty seconds, tap it out, leave it open to dry.

The leaving-it-open part matters more than it sounds. A wet head closed into a travel case corrodes from behind, on the cutter block you cannot see, and that is a failure that looks like a worn shaver rather than a maintenance one.

Weekly: the head comes apart

  1. Lift the foil or cassette off the way the manual shows. On Braun's Series 9 the whole cassette detaches as one; on the Panasonic the foil frame lifts and the inner blades come out separately.
  2. Brush the cutters and the inside of the head, not the foil.
  3. Rinse everything, shake it out, and reassemble dry - or leave it apart overnight, which is better.

Keep the parts together. Foils and cutters wear as a matched pair, and mixing cutters between two heads produces a shaver that cuts unevenly for reasons that are very hard to diagnose afterwards.

Oil, and why the answer is model-specific

Some shavers want a drop of light oil on the foil with the motor running; some sealed cassette designs explicitly do not. This is genuinely one of the few places in grooming where the correct answer differs by model, and the manual is the authority.

If you do oil, use the oil supplied or a light mineral oil - the same reasoning as clipper oil, where household sprays gum as they dry and cooking oils go rancid.

On cleaning stations

They work and they are a second consumable. A station cleans with an alcohol-based cartridge you replace on a schedule, on top of the head you already replace on a schedule.

Rinsing under a tap achieves the cleaning outcome for nothing. Buy a station because you want the convenience and the automatic charging, not because you think your shaver needs it - and factor the cartridges into the running cost, which is a calculation the calculator will do once you have the prices.

Replacement, on the schedule rather than by feel

Braun publishes about 18 months for the foil and cutter block. Philips publishes 4 months for the OneBlade blade and puts a wear indicator on the blade itself, which is the best practice in the category. Panasonic publishes nothing comparable for the Arc5.

Write the date on the box when you fit a new one. “It still feels fine” is not a reliable signal, because a foil degrades gradually and your face adjusts to it - the foil life guide covers what actually wears and how to tell.

Questions people actually ask

Can I rinse my electric shaver under the tap?

If it is published as waterproof, yes - and every premium shaver we rank is. Check your own model rather than assuming: older and cheaper foil shavers frequently are not, and the Remington F5 publishes no waterproof rating at all.

Why should I never brush the foil?

Because a shaver foil is a metal screen a few hundredths of a millimeter thick, and a stiff brush deforms or perforates it. A deformed foil is the most common cause of a shaver that suddenly starts nicking. Brush the cutters underneath; rinse the foil.

Do I need the cleaning station?

No. A cleaning and charging station is convenient and it uses a proprietary cartridge that costs money forever. Rinsing under a tap achieves the same cleaning outcome for nothing, which is worth knowing before you buy into another consumable.

How often should shaver heads be replaced?

Braun's parts guidance is about every 18 months for the foil and cutter block. Philips publishes four months for the OneBlade blade, with a wear indicator on the blade itself. Panasonic publishes no interval for the Arc5, which is what costs it on our disclosure axis.

My shaver pulls. Is it worn out?

Probably not yet. Clean it properly first - stubble packed under the foil produces exactly the pulling sensation people attribute to a worn cutter. If a properly cleaned head still pulls and it is past its published interval, then replace it.
