How to soften a beard
Five changes, ranked by effect. The first two are free, and most people try the fifth one first and conclude that beard oil does not work.

In order of how much difference each makes
- Stop washing it with shampoo or bar soap daily. Both strip the oil that keeps hair pliable. Two or three times a week, with water on the other days.
- Turn the water down. Hot water strips more than warm water does, on the beard and on the skin underneath.
- Comb it while it is damp. This distributes the oil your skin already makes along the length of the hair, which is the job a comb actually does.
- Add an unscented oil, into the skin first. Three to six drops on a towel-dry beard.
- Add a balm if the beard is over an inch. Below that there is nothing for the wax to hold.

First, work out which problem you have
“Soften my beard” covers three different complaints and they have different answers, so it is worth being precise before you spend anything:
- Wiry and scratchy to the touch is usually dryness plus split ends. The answers are washing less, and a trim.
- Itchy against the skin is a skin problem, not a hair problem. The answer is oil worked into the skin, and possibly a proper cleanser.
- Sticking out in every direction is not softness at all, it is hold. The answer is a balm and a comb, and it only applies past about an inch.
Most people diagnose the first as the third and buy a balm, which coats wiry hair without addressing why it is wiry.
1 and 2: the free changes
Beard hair is coarser than head hair and grows out of skin that produces sebum to keep it pliable. Shampoo and bar soap are both designed to remove sebum, which is exactly what they do, and then the hair is left to fend for itself until your skin catches up.
Wash it two or three times a week rather than daily, with water on the other days, and turn the water temperature down. Hot water strips more than warm water does. This costs nothing, takes two to three weeks to show, and does more than any product on this page.
3: the comb, and what it is actually for
A comb is not a styling tool on a beard under a few inches. Its job is mechanical distribution: dragging the oil your skin already makes from the roots, where it is produced, along the length of the hair, where it is needed.
Comb while the beard is damp rather than dry - dry combing on a coarse beard breaks hairs and creates exactly the split ends you are trying to get rid of. A wide-tooth comb or a boar-bristle beard brush; the specific tool matters less than doing it at all.
4: oil, into the skin
Now add product, and start unscented. 30 ml of argan and jojoba is a small outlay and it isolates the variable: if a fragranced oil makes your skin worse, you will not know whether the problem was the oil or the fragrance.

5: balm, only past an inch
A balm is an oil with beeswax and butters in it. Below about an inch of beard there is nothing for the wax to hold, so all it does is coat the hair - which feels like it is doing something and is not. The thing that is not on the list
Trimming. It is not in the ranked five because it is not a softening technique, and it is probably the single most effective thing on this page if your beard has never been trimmed. Split and damaged ends are where scratchiness actually lives, and no amount of oil rehabilitates a split hair.

Questions people actually ask
Why is my beard so wiry?
Usually because it is dry rather than because of the hair itself. Beard hair is coarser than head hair to begin with, and daily washing with shampoo or bar soap strips the oil that keeps it pliable. Change the washing before you buy anything.
Can I use hair conditioner on my beard?
You can, and it works. Ordinary conditioner is formulated for hair, and beard hair is hair. The reason dedicated beard products exist is that they are also formulated for the skin underneath, which conditioner is not - so if your problem is itch rather than wiriness, an oil is the better answer.
How long does it take to soften a beard?
Two to three weeks to see the effect of a washing change, because you are waiting for your skin's own oil to redistribute rather than adding something. Product effects are more immediate and more superficial, which is why they feel like they work faster and do less.
Does trimming make a beard softer?
It removes the split, damaged ends, which is where most of the scratchiness lives - so in practice yes, noticeably. If your beard has never been trimmed and feels like wire, a trim will do more than any product. The trimming guide is here.
