What a cleanser is actually for
Removing oil and grime without stripping the barrier. That is the entire job. Everything else printed on a bottle - charcoal, caffeine, energizing, for men - is either doing nothing or doing that job with more fragrance in it.
On a face that gets shaved, the “without stripping” half matters more than it does otherwise. A blade removes the outermost layer of dead skin along with the hair, so a shaved face has less barrier to spare, and a cleanser that leaves you tight is taking something you needed.
How we ranked these
On three published things: the ingredient list, whether it is fragrance-free, and the volume. That is the whole method here and it is unusually decisive in this category, because skincare labels are legally required to be complete and ordered by quantity - which makes this one of the easiest categories on the whole site to buy well in. The general method is here.
- Fragrance-free. Fragrance is one word covering many compounds and is the most common cause of contact irritation. On skin you are also putting a blade over, it is the first variable to eliminate.
- Published actives, in position. Ingredients are listed in descending order of quantity down to one per cent. Niacinamide fourth on the list is a concentration; niacinamide twenty-eighth is a marketing mention.
- Volume. 355 and 473 ml bottles make the cost per wash negligible, which matters because a cleanser only works if you actually use enough of it twice a day.
Why CeraVe Foaming is the pick
Fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, 355 ml, and three ceramides plus niacinamide and hyaluronic acid on a published list. Ceramides are the lipids that make up part of the skin barrier, so a cleanser that contains them is replacing some of what washing removes rather than only taking away.
It is aimed at normal-to-oily skin, which describes most faces that produce enough oil to want a foaming wash. If yours is genuinely dry, the hydrating version of the same product exists and the pump on the large bottle is unreliable on both.
The two medicated cleansers, and why they are lower
Both are good products and neither is a daily face wash for most people.
Effaclar is 2 per cent salicylic acid, which loosens dead skin from the surface and out of pores. That is the right mechanism for congestion and blackheads. It is also exfoliation, and a face being shaved several times a week is already being exfoliated mechanically - doing both daily is how people end up with skin that stings.
CeraVe Acne Foaming is 4 per cent benzoyl peroxide, which works on the bacteria in inflamed acne. Different mechanism, different problem. It also bleaches fabric, which is a genuinely practical consideration nobody mentions until a towel goes patchy.

What to do after washing

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
473 ml, soap-free, sulfate-free, fragrance-free, paraben-free, on a nine-ingredient list that includes glycerin, panthenol and niacinamide. It barely foams, which is the point: there is almost nothing in it to react to, and if your face is already irritated from shaving it is the safest thing to put on it.

A 4% benzoyl peroxide cream cleanser with the same three ceramides and niacinamide as the rest of the CeraVe range. Benzoyl peroxide works on the bacteria involved in inflamed acne, which is a different mechanism from salicylic acid and suits a different problem.

4Oil and blocked pores rather than active spots
La Roche-Posay Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser
Skip this one. Not as your everyday wash. A 2% salicylic acid cleanser is a treatment, and using it daily on a face that is also being shaved is exfoliating the same skin from two directions. It belongs in a rotation for congested skin, not in the sink as the default.
A 2% salicylic acid gel cleanser with LHA and glycerin, oil-free. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid that works by loosening dead skin from the surface and out of pores, which is the mechanism that matters if your problem is congestion and blackheads rather than inflamed spots.

Questions people actually ask
Do men need a men's face wash?
No. Skin is skin, and the differences that matter to a cleanser are dryness, oiliness and sensitivity rather than who is using it. What actually distinguishes most products marketed to men is fragrance and a darker bottle, and fragrance is the ingredient most likely to irritate a face that gets shaved.
Should I wash my face before or after shaving?
Before. Washing lifts oil and grime off the skin so the lather can reach the hair, and warm water during the wash starts softening the beard. Washing after shaving puts a cleanser on skin that has just had its top layer partly removed, which is unnecessary.
How often should I wash my face?
Twice a day is the standard advice and once is enough for a lot of dry faces. If your skin feels tight after washing, you are either washing too often or using something too harsh - and that tight feeling is the specific thing the picks on this page are chosen to avoid.
Is bar soap bad for your face?
It is not dangerous, it is just the wrong tool. Traditional bar soap is alkaline and strips more than a face needs, and on skin that is being shaved several times a week that matters more than it would otherwise. A gentle cleanser costs about the same over a year.
