How to prevent ingrown hairs on the body
The instinct is to shave closer so the hair cannot come back. That instinct is the cause, and it works the same way everywhere on a body.

The short version
Trim with a guard instead of shaving bare. A hair cut above the skin surface cannot retract below it, which removes the mechanism entirely - and every powered body groomer worth owning publishes a minimum comb length for exactly this reason. Then exfoliate with a salicylic acid two or three times a week, because it is oil-soluble and reaches inside the follicle where the trapped hair actually is. Moisturize daily. Do not dig them out.

The mechanism, in one paragraph
A blade cuts a hair at an angle, leaving a sharpened tip. If the cut happens at or below the skin surface - which is what a close shave means - the skin closes over that tip. The hair then grows into the follicle wall or back through the skin instead of out of it, and the body responds to a foreign object with inflammation. That inflamed spot is the bump.
Everything below follows from that. There are only two ways to intervene: stop the hair being cut below the surface, or keep the surface clear so it can get out.
The fix that removes the mechanism
Use a guard. Leaving one to three millimeters means the cut tip is above the skin, and a hair above the skin cannot retract below it. This is not a mitigation, it is an elimination of the cause, and it is why every body groomer worth buying publishes a minimum comb length.

A fixed 1.4 mm guard that cannot be removed is an unusual design choice and a deliberate one: it makes shaving bare impossible with that head. The body groomer roundup covers both tools properly.
Direction, and why the usual advice inverts here
On a face, with a safety razor, the standard sequence works with the grain first and then across. On a body with a trimmer, go with the grain and stop there. Against the grain lifts the hair and cuts it shorter than the guard implies - which reintroduces the sub-surface cut you just spent a guard avoiding.
The direction is not uniform. Chest hair usually grows downward and outward from the center; the lower back often grows upward; the stomach frequently changes direction around the navel. Run a dry hand over each area before you start - rough means against.
Keeping the surface clear
The second intervention is making sure the follicle opening is not blocked by dead skin, so a hair that is heading the wrong way can still find its way out.
- Salicylic acid, not glycolic. Salicylic is oil-soluble, so it dissolves into sebum and works inside the follicle. Glycolic is water-soluble and works on the surface. For this problem the difference is decisive.
- Two or three times a week, not on a day you trim. Acid on freshly-trimmed skin stings and adds irritation to an area that has just had enough.
- Use a product that publishes both its concentration and its pH. Above roughly pH 4 a salicylic product is largely inert whatever the percentage says, and almost nobody publishes their pH - which is what the exfoliant roundup ranks on.
- Not a scrub. Physical abrasion on skin that already has inflamed bumps spreads the inflammation and can break the surface, and it does not reach inside a follicle anyway.
The two habits nobody mentions
- Moisturize the area daily. Dry skin thickens at the surface, and a thicker surface layer narrows the follicle opening. Fragrance-free, on damp skin - and on a body that means a real dose, roughly 15 ml, which is why container size matters.
- Wear loose clothing for a day after trimming. Friction from tight fabric pushes freshly cut hairs sideways into the follicle wall. This is genuinely a meaningful share of the problem, it costs nothing, and nobody says it.
The ones you already have
Leave them alone. That is the whole treatment.
Digging an ingrown hair out with tweezers or a needle ruptures the follicle wall below the surface, which converts a non-inflamed problem into an inflamed one - and inflamed lesions are what leave marks. Keep exfoliating the area, keep it moisturized, stop trimming that area for a week or two, and most of them surface and resolve on their own inside a fortnight.
If one is painful, expanding, or still there after several weeks, that is beyond what a grooming page can help with. Nothing here is medical advice, and a persistent inflamed follicle is worth an actual opinion from somebody qualified to give one.
Where this matters most

Why do I get ingrown hairs on my chest and back?
Because the hair was cut at or below the skin surface, leaving a sharpened tip inside a follicle, and the skin closed over it. Shaving bare is the cause. Coarse or curly hair makes it much more likely, because a curling hair reaches the follicle wall sooner.
