Buy it if your beard is dense and you want the shave over quickly. A published 14,000 CPM linear motor producing up to 70,000 cross-cuts a minute across five blades, a head flexing in 16 directions, and a beard sensor taking 220 readings a second. The costs are a 45-minute runtime, no published head replacement interval, and more noise than the Brauns.

The published figures
- 14,000 CPM linear motor, producing up to 70,000 cross-cuts per minute across the five blades. This is the only motor speed published by any shaver maker on this site.

Compare that with the Braun Series 9, which publishes five named cutting elements and no motor figure at all, and the difference in approach is clear. Braun tells you what the parts are for; Panasonic tells you how fast they move.
What the speed actually buys
Fewer passes on dense growth. A faster cutting rate means more hairs severed per stroke, which means fewer strokes over the same patch - and going over the same patch repeatedly is the main mechanical cause of electric-shaver irritation.
So the speed figure is not a vanity specification. On a beard dense enough that a slower shaver needs three passes over the jaw, it is the difference between one pass and three, and that is a real comfort argument as well as a time one. The three real costs
Runtime. 45 minutes is the shortest of the shavers we rank. At a three-minute shave that is fifteen shaves, or about three weeks - fine, and less headroom than the 60 minutes on the Braun. The three-minute quick charge mitigates it.
No published replacement interval. Braun publishes about eighteen months for its foil and cutter block. Panasonic publishes nothing comparable, which means the largest ongoing cost of ownership is one you have to work out for yourself. That is the single figure keeping this below the Braun in our roundup.
Noise. Not published by anybody, and a genuine daily consideration for a fast foil shaver. We cannot rank what nobody publishes.
Who should buy it
Somebody with a dense beard who shaves daily and wants it over in three minutes. On that specific brief this is the best-specified tool available and the published figures support the claim rather than decorating it.
If your priority is a plannable running cost, the Braun Series 9 publishes the interval that lets you calculate it. If your face is contoured or your hair curls, rotary is a real alternative rather than a lesser one. Questions people actually ask
Is the Arc5 faster than the Braun Series 9?
On published figures it is the only one of the two that can be judged: Panasonic publishes 14,000 cuts per minute and Braun publishes no motor figure at all. So the honest answer is that Panasonic has disclosed a speed and Braun has not, which is not quite the same as one being faster.
What does the beard sensor actually do?
Panasonic publishes it as 220 detections per second with 14 power adjustments per second: it reads how dense the growth is under the head and raises or lowers motor power to match. In practice that means it is not running flat out over a thin patch, which is a plausible mechanism for less irritation.
How often do the foils need replacing?
Panasonic does not publish an interval for this model, which is what costs it on our disclosure axis against the Braun's published 18 months. Find the price of a replacement foil and cutter set before you buy, because it is proprietary and it is the real cost of ownership.
Is it loud?
Foil shavers are generally louder than rotaries and the Arc5 is a fast one. Nobody in the category publishes a noise figure, so we cannot rank it and will not substitute an impression for a specification. It is worth knowing that this is the axis a shaver review most often gets wrong by guessing.
