EltaMD UV Clear vs La Roche-Posay Anthelios

One is a small, expensive bottle you use on a face that breaks out. The other is three times the volume, because sunscreen only works in the quantity people actually apply.

The short answer

Buy EltaMD UV Clear if shaving breaks your face out. 50 ml of SPF 46 built on 9 per cent zinc oxide and 7.5 per cent octinoxate, with 5 per cent niacinamide, oil-free and non-comedogenic. Buy La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In if you want to cover more than a face. 148 ml of SPF 60, fragrance-free and water-resistant for 80 minutes - three times the volume, which is the specification that decides whether you apply enough.

They solve different problems

Both of these turn up on dermatologist shelves and both are genuinely good. They are built for different complaints.

EltaMD UV Clear is for a face that reacts. Oil-free, non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, with 5 per cent niacinamide alongside the filters - aimed squarely at skin that breaks out, which is most skin that gets shaved every morning.

Anthelios Melt-In is for coverage. 148 ml for face and body, SPF 60, water-resistant for a published 80 minutes.

Published figures only. Note the actives row: the EltaMD is a hybrid, not a mineral sunscreen.

Where the EltaMD wins

  • Acne-prone, freshly shaved skin. Oil-free and non-comedogenic with niacinamide is the best combination here for a face that congests.
  • It publishes a second active. 5 per cent niacinamide is a real concentration, not a trace.
  • Texture on a face. It is the lighter of the two under a moisturizer or alone.
  • Zinc oxide at a published 9 per cent, which is a meaningful mineral share even in a hybrid.

Where the La Roche-Posay wins

  • Volume. Three times the bottle, which is three times the likelihood you apply enough.
  • Published water resistance. 80 minutes, stated - the EltaMD publishes none.
  • Body coverage. Arms, neck, a shaved scalp - all the places a face-sized bottle never reaches.
  • Cost per milliliter. Not close, and it is the reason people actually reapply.

The honest cons, both ways

EltaMD: it is the most expensive sunscreen per milliliter in this ledger, publishes no water-resistance figure, and it is widely mistaken for a mineral sunscreen when it publishes a chemical filter at 7.5 per cent.

Anthelios: four chemical filters and no mineral component, which rules it out if you specifically want zinc; and a fluid milk texture on a face can feel shinier than a dedicated facial formula.

The verdict

A face that breaks out after shaving: EltaMD UV Clear. The niacinamide and the non-comedogenic formulation are the reason it is on dermatology shelves.

Everything else, and everyone who under-applies: Anthelios Melt-In. The bottle is the specification, and a generous daily habit beats a premium formula used sparingly.

Plenty of people end up owning both - the small one for the face, the big one for everything else. The SPF explainer covers what the numbers actually promise.

Our pickShaved skin that breaks out

EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46

9.1/10

50 ml of SPF 46 built on 9% zinc oxide and 7.5% octinoxate, with 5% niacinamide, oil-free, fragrance-free and non-comedogenic. Freshly shaved skin is skin with its top layer taken off, and this is the sunscreen that goes on it without causing the breakouts that stop people wearing one.

Published key ingredients: Zinc oxide 9%, Octinoxate 7.5%, Niacinamide 5%.

The arithmetic: 50 ml / 1.25 ml per face-and-neck dose (assumed) = about 40 applications.

What it gets right

  • Published actives: zinc oxide 9%, octinoxate 7.5% — an actual disclosed concentration
  • 5% niacinamide, published as a percentage rather than a claim
  • Oil-free, fragrance-free, paraben-free and non-comedogenic
  • Formulated for acne-prone skin, which is where shaving irritation lives

Flaws

  • 50 ml at a price that makes daily face-and-neck use a real decision
  • SPF 46 is a body-and-face lotion price for a face-only bottle
The working behind the 9.1
How long it lasts: 9.2
50 ml / 1.25 ml per face-and-neck dose (assumed) = about 40 applications. At five shaves a week, that is about 1.8 months. A 2-month supply scores 10 in this category, so 1.8 / 2 x 10 = 9.2.
Ease of switching: 9.0
Published active percentages, non-comedogenic and fragrance-free (++), formulated for the acne-prone skin shaving irritation produces (+), 50 ml at a price that discourages using enough of it (-).
Refill economics: 8.0
Nothing to refill. The only future cost is replacing the item itself.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk SPF 60

9.3/10

148 ml of SPF 60 for face and body, with published actives, fragrance-free, oil-free, non-comedogenic and water-resistant for 80 minutes. The reason it is here is volume: sunscreen only works in the quantity people actually apply, and a bottle three times the size is a bottle you use generously.

The arithmetic: 148 ml / 1.25 ml per face-and-neck dose (assumed) = about 120 applications.

What it gets right

  • 148 ml for face and body — the volume that makes generous application affordable
  • Published actives: avobenzone 3%, homosalate 10%, octisalate 5%, octocrylene 7%
  • Fragrance-free, oil-free, non-comedogenic, water-resistant for 80 minutes
  • SPF 60, the highest here

Flaws

  • A chemical filter set rather than mineral, which some reactive faces prefer to avoid
  • Body-lotion texture is heavier on the face than a dedicated facial sunscreen

How long it lasts: 10.0
148 ml / 1.25 ml per face-and-neck dose (assumed) = about 120 applications. At five shaves a week, that is about 5.5 months. A 2-month supply scores 10 in this category, so 5.5 / 2 x 10 = 10.0.
Ease of switching: 9.0
148 ml removes the rationing that makes most people under-apply sunscreen (++), published actives and fragrance-free (+), a body texture on the face and a chemical filter set (-).

Questions people actually ask

Is EltaMD a mineral sunscreen?

No - it is a hybrid, and this is the most common misunderstanding about it. It publishes 9 per cent zinc oxide and 7.5 per cent octinoxate, a chemical filter. That page covers the distinction and why it matters if you chose it to avoid chemical filters.

Does the SPF difference matter?

Less than the amount you apply. SPF 46 and SPF 60 are close in real protection terms; using half the recommended quantity costs you far more than the fourteen points between them.

Which is better under a beard?

The lighter fluid texture, applied to the skin you can reach - which is the Anthelios for most people. The beard sunscreen page covers the technique.

Can I use these on a shaved head?

The Anthelios, yes - a scalp needs volume and it is the bigger bottle by a distance. The scalp guide makes the case that this is the least optional step a bald man has.

Which is better for sensitive skin?

Both are fragrance-free, which is the first filter. The EltaMD adds niacinamide, which supports the barrier; the Anthelios has the simpler job and the larger bottle. Neither is a bad answer.

Do I need sunscreen if I shave every day?

More than if you did not. Shaving removes the outer layer of skin daily, which leaves fresher skin facing the sun - the roundup covers the textures men actually tolerate.
