The honest framing
Sunscreen is the product on this whole site with the largest effect over a lifetime and the lowest compliance. Most men do not wear it daily, and the reasons given are consistent: it feels heavy, it causes breakouts, or it is expensive enough to ration.
Which means the ranking here is not really about which formula is better. Both products here are good. It is about which one you will actually put on in the quantity the label assumes.
Published actives, which is unusually good in this category
Sunscreen is regulated as a drug in the United States, so the active ingredients and their concentrations must be printed. That makes it one of the very few categories on this site where you can compare products on a published number rather than a claim.

Why the volume wins
At our assumed 1.25 ml per face-and-neck dose, 148 ml is about a hundred and twenty applications and 50 ml is about forty. Applied daily, that is four months against six weeks.
It is a body-and-face lotion, so the texture is heavier on a face than a dedicated facial sunscreen. That is a real trade and it is the right one for most people, because the alternative is a lighter product used in a quantity that does not deliver the label.
When to buy the EltaMD instead
When breakouts are the specific thing that stops you wearing sunscreen. It is formulated for acne-prone skin, the zinc oxide is micronized, and the 5% niacinamide is there for exactly that population. Questions people actually ask
How much sunscreen should I use on my face?
More than you are. Our yield arithmetic assumes 1.25 ml for a face-and-neck dose, which is roughly two finger-lengths of product squeezed along the index and middle fingers. Under-applying is the single most common reason a sunscreen underperforms the SPF on its label, and it is why bottle size is a real specification.
Do I need sunscreen if I shave every day?
Especially then. Shaving removes the outermost layer of dead skin along with the hair, so a freshly shaved face is more exposed rather than less. Apply it after the shave and after the moisturizer has absorbed.
Is mineral sunscreen better than chemical?
Not better, different. Mineral filters like zinc oxide sit on the surface and scatter light; chemical filters absorb it. Mineral suits reactive skin and can leave a cast; chemical is lighter and more cosmetically invisible. The EltaMD here is largely mineral, the La Roche-Posay is chemical, and both publish their actives as percentages.
Can I just use a moisturizer with SPF?
You can, and in practice people apply far less moisturizer than they would sunscreen, so the delivered protection is well below the number on the tube. If it is the difference between some protection and none, use it. If you will apply a separate sunscreen properly, do that.
What does water resistant for 80 minutes mean?
It is a regulated claim: the product maintained its SPF through a specified immersion protocol for that duration. It is not a claim that it lasts 80 minutes in general use, and it does not remove the need to reapply.
