Every product here is permanent oxidative dye: a color base mixed with a peroxide developer, applied to skin on your face. That chemistry works, and it carries a real and published risk of allergic reaction that can be severe.

• Do not use it at all if you have ever reacted to a hair color product, or to a temporary black henna tattoo, or if the skin is irritated or damaged.

• Stop immediately if you notice any skin depigmentation - white patches or loss of skin color - which is a published, if rare, association.

It wins on disclosure. Both tubes have published ingredient lists, the allergy test is published step by step, and the warning set is the most complete in this category by a distance. When the risk in a product is an allergic reaction, the maker that tells you most about it is the one to buy.

The honest cons. Toluene-2,5-diamine, resorcinol and m-aminophenol are all on the published list - this is permanent dye chemistry and it carries the allergy risk that goes with it. No net weight is published anywhere. The 48-hour test before every use is a genuine imposition, and it is the maker's own instruction rather than a cautious reading of it.

For patchy gray: Godefroy Tint Kit

Four pre-measured single-use color capsules and a 5 ml cream developer, published at two to three minutes for Natural Black - the shortest processing time here - with one capsule published as covering a one to two inch patch.

The capsule system is the reason to buy it. Most people dyeing a beard are not dyeing all of it; they are covering a gray patch at the chin or the temples. Mixing a single capsule instead of opening two full tubes means no waste, no half-used product oxidizing in a cupboard, and a smaller area of skin exposed.

The honest cons. P-phenylenediamine and resorcinol are both on the published capsule list. The two published patch-test instructions contradict each other - the brand says do not wash the test area for 24 hours, the retail listing says test 48 hours ahead - and when instructions disagree you follow the longer one. No eyelash, eyebrow or broken-skin warning is published on any Godefroy page, which is a real gap for this chemistry. No country of manufacture, and no claim for how long the color lasts.

Doing it without a disaster

1. Test 48 hours ahead, on the inside of the elbow. Mix a small equal-parts amount, apply a coin-sized patch, leave it unwashed and uncovered, and check it over two days.
2. Start with the shortest published time. Longer means darker and there is no undo. Five minutes on a first attempt, not ten.
3. Go one shade lighter than your hair used to be. A beard dyed to the color of your twenties reads as dyed. Matching the darkest hairs currently in the beard reads as your beard.
4. Wear the gloves. Every kit includes them and the pigment stains skin far more visibly than hair.
5. Protect the hairline and the edges. Dye migrates along skin; a thin layer of balm at the neckline and cheek line keeps the color where the hair is.
6. Condition afterwards, once rinsed. Oxidative color opens the cuticle - oil and a gentle wash close the gap between dyed and healthy.

If you react

This is the section nobody reads until they need it, so it is worth knowing before you start. Just For Men publishes the procedure and it is the right one for any of these:

1. Rinse it out and shampoo immediately. Do not wait to see whether it settles, and do not finish the processing time.
2. Stop using dye products entirely until you have spoken to a doctor. A reaction once means sensitization, and the next exposure can be worse rather than milder.
3. Get medical help immediately for difficulty breathing, tightness of the chest, or hives or swelling anywhere on the body. That is the published instruction, and it is not a cautious reading of it.
4. Keep the empty package for a few days. Also published - it is what a clinician will want to see.

The reason the 48-hour test matters is that it moves this from your face to a coin-sized patch on your arm. That is the entire trade, and it costs two days of patience.
