How to fix a patchy beard

1. Wait four weeks, which is the hardest step

Beard hairs do not grow at the same rate, so early growth is far more uneven than the same beard is a month later. Areas that look bare at two weeks frequently are not - they are simply behind.

Four weeks minimum before you judge, six if you can stand it. This is where most people quit, and it is the step that costs nothing and changes the most. Resist tidying it during this period too: trimming the parts that are growing to match the parts that are not is how a temporary unevenness becomes a permanent one.

2. One length beats one thick area

This is the counter-intuitive part and it is the core technique. A beard that is 20 mm in some places and 6 mm in others reads as patchy. The same beard taken uniformly to 6 mm reads as a deliberate short beard.

You are not adding hair, you are removing the contrast that draws the eye to the gaps. Take the whole beard down to roughly the length of the thinnest area that still has coverage, and the patchiness stops being the thing people notice.

3. Sharpen the edges to strengthen the middle

Definition at the boundary makes everything inside it look more intentional. A clean neck line and a tidy cheek line do more for how a thin beard reads than any product.

• Neck line: roughly two finger-widths above the Adam's apple, following the jaw's curve in a shallow U.
• Cheek line: take off the strays above your highest continuous line of growth and otherwise leave it alone. On a patchy beard the temptation is to shave the cheek line lower to remove sparse areas - which usually makes the beard look thinner by reducing it.

4. Make the hair you have lie across the gaps

Hair standing away from the face exposes the skin between it. Hair lying across the face covers more ground. That is a real and immediate improvement available to anybody with a comb.

Condition it so it lies flat: an unscented oil worked into the skin and combed through while damp, in that order. 5. Pick a shape that works with your growth

Growth patterns are individual and permanent, and fighting yours is a losing strategy. Working with it is not a compromise.

Thin cheeks with strong chin and mustache growth is by far the most common pattern, and a goatee, a circle beard or a chin strap all work with it directly. Heavy stubble at 3 to 5 mm is the other reliable answer: short enough that unevenness does not show, long enough to read as a beard rather than as not having shaved.

The honest part
