Moisturizer does two jobs on a shaved face
The first is the ordinary one: put water into the skin and put something over the top to stop it leaving. The second is specific to shaving. A blade removes the outermost layer of dead skin along with the hair, so the barrier is temporarily thinner and loses water faster - which is why a shaved face feels tight in a way an unshaved one does not.
That second job is the same job a post-shave balm does. Which means that for most people a good fragrance-free moisturizer makes the balm redundant, and that is one product removed from a routine rather than one added. Reading position on the label
Ingredients are listed in descending order of quantity down to one per cent, after which the order is the manufacturer's choice. That single rule makes moisturizer one of the easiest categories to evaluate honestly, and it is the basis of the ranking here.
On the CeraVe PM, niacinamide is the fourth ingredient - after water, glycerin and a triglyceride. Fourth means a real concentration doing real work. Contrast that with the many products where niacinamide appears near the end of a long list, present so that the front of the bottle can name it.
Texture is the adherence problem
The most common reason men do not moisturize is that it feels like wearing something. Which makes texture a genuine specification rather than a preference: a product you will use twice a day beats a better product you will use twice a month.

What a moisturizer does not do

Questions people actually ask
Do I need a moisturizer if my skin is oily?
Yes, and oily skin that feels tight after washing is skin that is producing oil to compensate for a stripped barrier. A gel-textured, oil-free moisturizer adds water without adding grease, which is the specific reason the Neutrogena is on this page.
Can I use body lotion on my face?
You can, and it is usually heavier and more fragranced than a facial product needs to be. On a face that gets shaved, fragrance is the ingredient most likely to cause trouble, so this is one of the few places where the facial version genuinely earns its separate bottle.
When should I apply moisturizer?
On damp skin, immediately after washing or shaving. Moisturizer works partly by holding water in, so applying it to a face that has already air-dried gives it less to hold. Morning and night, or just after shaving if that is the only time you will actually do it.
Is a night cream different from a day cream?
