Picking between them is a matter of matching the mechanism to the problem rather than picking the stronger one. If your complaint is blackheads and skin that feels rough, salicylic acid. If it is red sore spots, benzoyl peroxide.
The complication nobody accounts for
Every article about acne cleansers is written for a face that is not being shaved. Yours is, several times a week, and that changes the dose.
A blade removes the outermost layer of dead skin along with the hair. That is mechanical exfoliation, and it is happening on the same days you would be applying a chemical exfoliant. Stacking the two daily is the most common route to skin that is too irritated to shave at all - at which point you stop using the cleanser, conclude it did not work, and the acne comes back.
- Start every other day. Medicated wash on non-shaving days, a plain fragrance-free cleanser on shaving days.
- Build up only if your skin tolerates it. Two weeks at every other day before you increase anything.

Why two plain cleansers are on this page at all
Because for a lot of people with mildly acne-prone skin, the answer is not a medicated wash. It is a gentle, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic cleanser used consistently, and a moisturizer afterwards so the skin stops overproducing oil to compensate.

Make sure it is actually acne
A great many bumps on a shaved neck are not acne at all. They are ingrown hairs: hair cut at or below the skin surface that curls back and grows into the skin, producing raised, inflamed spots a day or two after shaving. They look like acne. Neither of the actives on this page fixes them, and a closer shave makes them worse.

Does shaving cause acne?
Shaving does not cause acne, but it can aggravate it two ways: dragging a blade across an inflamed spot spreads bacteria, and hair cut below the skin surface can grow back in, producing bumps that look like acne and are not. Those are ingrown hairs and are a different problem.
