How to shave with acne
A blade across an inflamed spot opens it, spreads it and scars it. Shaving is still possible - it just stops being about closeness.

The short version
Shave around active spots, never over them, and give up on closeness until the skin settles. One pass with the grain, a sharp blade changed often, a fragrance-free lather, and no stretching the skin taut over an inflamed area. An electric with a guard is the safer tool during a bad week because it never touches the skin surface. Nothing with alcohol goes on afterwards - a fragrance-free balm does, and the salicylic acid goes on a night you have not shaved.

The rule that matters more than any product
Do not shave over an active spot. Everything else on this page is adjustment; this one is the difference between skin that settles in a week and skin that scars.
A blade drawn over a raised, inflamed lesion opens it. That does three things at once: it makes an open wound of something that was closed, it drags the contents across neighboring follicles, and it turns a spot that would have healed invisibly into one that may not. Shave up to it, around it, and leave the hair growing on it until it has gone down.
Before: the twenty minutes that decide it
- Shave at the end of a shower, not the start. Warm, genuinely wet hair cuts with far less force, and less force is the whole objective.
- Wash with a medicated cleanser, gently, with your hands. A benzoyl peroxide cleanser works on the bacteria involved in inflamed acne. No scrub, no brush, no washcloth - mechanical exfoliation on inflamed skin is adding injury to the thing you are treating.
- Map the spots. Thirty seconds in the mirror working out where the raised areas are, before there is lather covering them. You cannot avoid what you cannot see.
- Use a fragrance-free lather, and plenty of it. Thin lather means the blade contacts skin rather than cushion.
During: one pass, with the grain
- Sharp blade, changed early. A dull blade is pressure and repetition, which is precisely the abrasion to avoid.
- With the grain only. Against the grain is closer and rougher on skin that cannot afford rough.
- Do not stretch the skin. Pulling it taut lifts the follicle into the blade - good for closeness, bad for spots.
- Short strokes, no pressure, rinse often. A loaded blade drags.
- Leave the inflamed areas alone entirely. A few days of hair on a patch of jaw is invisible. A scar is not.
If a bad week makes even that feel risky, put the blade down and use an electric with a guard for a few days. It cuts above the skin surface and cannot open a lesion - the irritation guide covers using one on reactive skin.

Nothing with alcohol. A traditional splash on freshly shaved, inflamed skin stings because it is stripping a barrier that is already compromised, and the drying rebound makes oil production worse. The balm comparison covers what to use instead.
Putting it on a week
- Shaving days: medicated cleanser, shave with the grain, fragrance-free balm. Nothing else.
- Non-shaving days: normal cleanser, and the BHA in the evening if you use one.
- Every day: sunscreen in the morning. Acne treatments increase sun sensitivity and post-spot marks darken with UV - the roundup covers the ones that do not clog.
- Shave less often while it is bad. Every second or third day, not daily. This is the single most effective change on the page and it costs nothing.
When this page is not the answer
Everything here is about not making acne worse while you shave. It is not treatment for the acne itself. Deep, painful nodules, cysts, or breakouts that are leaving marks are a dermatology conversation, and prescription options work on a scale that no cleanser does.
If what you actually have is small bumps concentrated on the neck that appear a day or two after shaving, that is probably not acne at all - razor bumps are a different mechanism with a different fix.

Vanicream Shave Cream
A 6 oz tube with the entire ingredient list published and almost nothing on it. Vanicream states it free of fragrance, dye, parabens, formaldehyde, lanolin and alcohol, and free of botanical extracts and essential oils - which is the rarest exclusion of the four, because botanicals are the usual hidden irritant in products sold as gentle. If 'sensitive' is going to mean anything, this is what it looks like.

Both numbers matter: a BHA below about pH 4 is doing chemistry and above it is doing very little, and almost nobody in this category publishes their pH at all. Questions people actually ask
Should I shave over a spot?
No. A blade across a raised, inflamed spot decapitates it, which opens it, invites infection into surrounding follicles and is the most reliable way to turn a spot into a scar. Shave up to it and leave the hair on it.
Is electric better than a blade for acne?
During an active breakout, usually yes. A foil or a guard keeps the cutting edge off the skin surface, so it removes hair without abrading spots. That roundup covers the gentler options. Between breakouts a sharp blade is fine and often kinder than a dull electric.
How often should I change the blade?
More often than you would otherwise. A dull blade needs pressure and repeated passes, which is exactly the abrasion inflamed skin cannot take - this page covers the interval. On a bad week, treat a blade as a two or three shave item.
Can I use benzoyl peroxide and still shave?
Yes, and the timing matters. Use the medicated cleanser in the shower before you shave, not as an aftershave. Benzoyl peroxide also bleaches fabric, so it belongs on a white towel or none at all.
What about salicylic acid?
Useful, on nights you have not shaved. A 2 per cent BHA gets into a pore and keeps it clear, which addresses the congestion; applying it to skin abraded twenty minutes ago just stings. The acne cleanser page covers the two mechanisms.
Will growing a beard fix it?
It removes the mechanical irritation, which for some faces is the whole problem. It does not fix the acne itself, and skin under a beard still needs washing and still gets congested - that page covers what changes underneath.
