Skincare for oily skin
The instinct is to strip it harder. That is usually what is causing it, and the fix runs in the opposite direction to what the shelf suggests.

The short version
Stop stripping it. Skin that feels tight after washing has had its barrier removed and frequently responds by producing more oil. Wash twice a day with a fragrance-free cleanser rather than three times with something harsh, moisturize with a gel rather than skipping it, and use an oil-free sunscreen. Adding a stronger product is the instinct and usually the cause.

The loop that most oily-skin routines are stuck in
Skin feels greasy. You wash it harder, more often, with something stronger. It feels clean and tight for an hour. By mid-afternoon it is greasier than before, so you wash it again.
Stripping removes the barrier that holds water in the skin. Skin that has lost water and barrier lipids frequently responds by producing more sebum, which is the only thing it can make quickly. So the harsh cleanser produces the shine that justifies the harsh cleanser.
The routine, which is the same three products
Oily skin does not need a different routine from the standard three. It needs the same three chosen for texture.
- A fragrance-free foaming cleanser, twice a day. CeraVe Foaming is aimed at normal-to-oily skin, non-comedogenic, and carries three ceramides plus niacinamide - so it puts back some of what washing removes. 355 ml means using enough is never a decision.
- A gel moisturizer, on damp skin. Not a cream. Neutrogena Hydro Boost is oil-free and fragrance-free with a gel texture that disappears rather than sitting on the skin, and that texture is the entire reason oily-skinned men actually use it.
- An oil-free sunscreen. EltaMD UV Clear publishes zinc oxide 9 per cent and niacinamide 5 per cent, oil-free and non-comedogenic. It is formulated for exactly this skin and it is the reason it exists.
Texture is a specification, not a preference
The reason this page names specific textures rather than just ingredients is adherence. A product you will use twice a day beats a better product you use twice a month, and on oily skin the thing that decides that is whether it feels like wearing something.
That is why the gel moisturizer is the pick over the lotion recommended on the general moisturizer roundup. Both are fragrance-free and oil-free; one disappears and one does not, and on this skin type the difference decides whether the routine survives a week.
The one active worth knowing about
Niacinamide appears in two of the three picks here, and it is published as a real concentration in one of them - EltaMD declares 5 per cent. It is included in formulas aimed at oily and acne-prone skin, and it is one of the few actives in this category where you can find a stated percentage rather than a marketing mention.
As with everything else on this site, position on the label is the tell: an ingredient named fourth is present in a meaningful amount and one named twenty-eighth is present so it can be named on the front.
What not to do
- Do not wash more than twice a day. Three times is where the loop starts.
- Do not use an alcohol astringent. The matte feeling is the stripping, and the stripping is the cause.
- Do not skip moisturizer. The single most common mistake on oily skin and the one that keeps the loop running.
- Do not exfoliate daily on a face you also shave. A blade removes the outer layer of dead skin mechanically; adding a chemical exfoliant daily is doing it twice. That roundup covers dosing if you have spots as well as shine.
Give any change two to four weeks. Skin turns over on roughly that cycle, and switching at day five is why people conclude nothing works.
Every pick, with the working
Each entry shows the published specifications, the axis scores they produce and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one, and the arithmetic is open underneath every score.
Our pickAlmost every face, almost every morning
CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser
355 ml, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, with three ceramides plus niacinamide and hyaluronic acid on a fully published list. It cleans without stripping, which is the entire job, and at this volume the cost per wash is negligible. If you are buying one thing for your face, buy this.
- Volume

- Warranty
- Not applicable
- How long it lasts
- 180 uses
Published key ingredients: Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic acid, Glycerin.
The arithmetic: 355 ml / 2 ml per application (assumed) = about 180 applications.
What it gets right
- 355 ml with a complete published ingredient list
- Fragrance-free and non-comedogenic
- Ceramides 1, 3 and 6-II plus niacinamide and hyaluronic acid
- Available in general retail everywhere
Flaws
- Foaming formula is aimed at normal-to-oily skin; genuinely dry faces want the hydrating version
- The pump is unreliable on the large bottle
The working behind the 9.4
- How long it lasts: 10.0
- 355 ml / 2 ml per application (assumed) = about 180 applications. At five shaves a week, that is about 8.3 months. A 5-month supply scores 10 in this category, so 8.3 / 5 x 10 = 10.0.
- Ease of switching: 9.5
- Fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, published ingredient list, and 355 ml so the cost of using it properly is nothing (++). Aimed at normal-to-oily skin, so a very dry face needs the other one (-).
- Refill economics: 8.0
- Nothing to refill. The only future cost is replacing the item itself.
- What the maker publishes: 10.0
- 3 of 3 specifications a buyer would expect are published: volumeMl, keyIngredients, fragranceFree. 3 / 3 x 10 = 10.0.
Axes with no published input are dropped and the remaining weights re-normalized, so a product is not punished for a category where an axis does not apply. Specifications compiled 3 September 2026 from CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser published specifications.
2Shaved skin that breaks out
EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46
50 ml of SPF 46 built on 9% zinc oxide and 7.5% octinoxate, with 5% niacinamide, oil-free, fragrance-free and non-comedogenic. Freshly shaved skin is skin with its top layer taken off, and this is the sunscreen that goes on it without causing the breakouts that stop people wearing one.

- How long it lasts
- 40 uses
Published key ingredients: Zinc oxide 9%, Octinoxate 7.5%, Niacinamide 5%.
The arithmetic: 50 ml / 1.25 ml per face-and-neck dose (assumed) = about 40 applications.
What it gets right
- Published actives: zinc oxide 9%, octinoxate 7.5% — an actual disclosed concentration
- 5% niacinamide, published as a percentage rather than a claim
- Oil-free, fragrance-free, paraben-free and non-comedogenic
- Formulated for acne-prone skin, which is where shaving irritation lives
Flaws
- 50 ml at a price that makes daily face-and-neck use a real decision
- SPF 46 is a body-and-face lotion price for a face-only bottle
The working behind the 9.1
- How long it lasts: 9.2
- 50 ml / 1.25 ml per face-and-neck dose (assumed) = about 40 applications. At five shaves a week, that is about 1.8 months. A 2-month supply scores 10 in this category, so 1.8 / 2 x 10 = 9.2.
- Ease of switching: 9.0
- Published active percentages, non-comedogenic and fragrance-free (++), formulated for the acne-prone skin shaving irritation produces (+), 50 ml at a price that discourages using enough of it (-).
- Refill economics: 8.0
- Nothing to refill. The only future cost is replacing the item itself.
- What the maker publishes: 10.0
- 4 of 4 specifications a buyer would expect are published: volumeMl, spf, keyIngredients, fragranceFree. 4 / 4 x 10 = 10.0.
Axes with no published input are dropped and the remaining weights re-normalized, so a product is not punished for a category where an axis does not apply. Specifications compiled 3 September 2026 from EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 published actives.
3Oily skin that still gets tight after shaving
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream
50 ml of an oil-free, fragrance-free gel cream built on hyaluronic acid, amino acids, electrolytes and ceramides. The gel texture disappears rather than sitting on the skin, which is the difference that gets an oily-skinned man to actually use a moisturizer twice a day.
- Volume
- 50 ml
- Fragrance
- Fragrance-free
- Refill
- Nothing to refill
- Warranty
- Not applicable
- How long it lasts
- 25 uses
Published key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, Amino acids, Electrolytes, Ceramides.
The arithmetic: 50 ml / 2 ml per application (assumed) = about 25 applications.
What it gets right
- Oil-free and fragrance-free, non-comedogenic
- Gel texture absorbs without residue, which is the adherence problem solved
- Published formula with hyaluronic acid, amino acids, electrolytes and ceramides
Flaws
- 50 ml is the smallest pot here
- A gel does less for genuinely dry, cold-weather skin than a cream
- Neutrogena publishes marketing hydration percentages rather than concentrations
The working behind the 7.7
- How long it lasts: 3.8
- 50 ml / 2 ml per application (assumed) = about 25 applications. At five shaves a week, that is about 1.2 months. A 3-month supply scores 10 in this category, so 1.2 / 3 x 10 = 3.8.
- Ease of switching: 9.0
- Fragrance-free, oil-free, and a texture that removes the main reason men skip moisturizer (++). 50 ml, and marketing percentages instead of concentrations in the published material (-).
Specifications compiled 3 September 2026 from Neutrogena Hydro Boost published specifications.

Questions people actually ask
Should I moisturize if my skin is oily?
Yes. Skin that feels tight after washing has been stripped, and skin frequently compensates by producing more oil. A gel-textured, oil-free moisturizer adds water without adding grease, which is why it is the pick here rather than a cream.
How often should I wash oily skin?
Twice a day. Three or four times is where people go when twice is not working, and it reliably makes things worse by removing the barrier faster than it rebuilds.
Do I need a toner or an astringent?
No. An alcohol-based astringent gives an immediate matte feeling by stripping oil, which is the mechanism this whole page argues against. If you want the astringent sensation, alcohol-free witch hazel does it without the stripping.
Is oily skin the same as acne-prone skin?
Related but not the same. Oily skin is about sebum production; acne is about blocked pores and inflammation, and plenty of people have one without the other. If your problem is spots rather than shine, that roundup covers the two published actives that address it.
Does shaving make oily skin worse?
It does not increase oil production, but it does remove the outermost layer of skin along with the hair, which makes a face more reactive to whatever you put on it next. That is the argument for fragrance-free products rather than for shaving less.
